Verdel first came to Trust House in September 2005. A mother of four children, she was ready to earn her high school diploma. In addition to enrolling in our GED program, Verdel studied Computer Literacy. A few months after we first met her, she lost her apartment and all of her personal belongings in a fire. Instead of giving up like so many people in her situation would, Verdel continued to attend classes at Trust House. Our social services coordinator made referrals to various agencies which helped Verdel with issues like furniture and clothing, as well as helping her to find a new apartment. While continuing to participate in Trust House programs, Verdel attended other programs to hone her job skills. We congratulate Verdel on her perseverance and hard work. Verdel was also featured in the United Way Community Campaign.
Genoveva’s is another story of determination. She has been with Trust House in some capacity since 1999 when she first came to study in our GED class to obtain her high school diploma. Her daughter, Rosa, participated in Early Childhood Education. Due to family problems and other circumstances, Genoveva discontinued her studies temporarily. As a result of outreach efforts, she soon rejoined the program before discontinuing again because she was pregnant and placed on bedrest. Fourteen months later, she returned to Trust House to finish what she had started years before. On June 6, 2006, she received her high school diploma in the mail. In addition to this great accomplishment, Genoveva participated in many of our Family Services activities, such as the Nurturing Program. She is currently studying to become a Certified Nurse Asssistant at Goodwin College. We wish Genoveva much luck on her transition into higher education.
