Our program is unique because of the one-on-one and small group classes that we provide, taught mainly by volunteers. Many students study with the same tutor for the duration of their studies, building relationships and fostering a sense of achievement together.
Upon entering our agency, a student meets with the program director to determine his or her placement in classes. Many students enroll in Adult Education, Family Services, and Nurturing Families Network simultaneously depending on their needs. Descriptions of Adult Education program components are as follows:
General Educational Development (GED):
Students work one-on-one or in small groups with a tutor to study for the GED test. Each student takes five Official GED Practice Tests before registering for the exam. Staff members assist students with the exam registration process.
Adult Basic Education (ABE):
Classes are designed for students who want to improve basic reading and writing skills. In addition, reading and math are applied to daily life skills. This class is appropriate to take prior to the GED preparation class.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL):
Classes focus on improving reading and conversational English. A wide variety of texts are available and students are grouped according to their ability.
Computer Literacy:
The basics of computer operation and word processing are taught. An informal setting helps students become comfortable with the educational software and develop skills that assist with homework, resume development, and job searches.
